Question for any RNs [Nov. 18th, 2008|09:46 pm]

[elle_ann]
[Current Mood | hopeful]

Hi!

I'm emigrating to NZ from South Africa, and I have a few telephonic job interviews coming up for RN positions in Wellington. I've reviewed the facility websites, but I wondered if there were any nurses (or anyone else!) here who might have knowledge of any of them, and who could give me some insider insight into working conditions, company culture, reputation and so on? It's so hard to know what a place is really like if you're not local and as I might end up having to choose between them, I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer. :-)

It's now quarter to one in the morning. I was up at 5 today/yesterday morning and I have to be awake again in four hours! But I've been at D&D, my last full session before I leave so I didn't want to leave early, and then in the last thirty minutes of my time there I was grappled by evil man-eating plants TWO times AND THEN I was shot at - like, my turns were literally, get grappled, fail to have attack of opportunity on plant because I was wielding my bow (!@##), take seven damage (significant when you have 15 HP), wait for my turn, roll nat 20 on escape artist to get out, move away from the plant, GET GRAPPLED AGAIN, rinse and repeat, except for taking three turns to get a successful escape artist check, AND THEN dude comes out and shoots at me again. IT WAS RIDICULOUS. Everyone was a-hating on me. I'm pretty sure my DM was trying to kill me.

So I was all adrenaline-high and excited and therefore TEARY and EMOTIONAL because I am LEAVING really really soon. I nearly embarassed myself by bursting into tears. Because of DM's obsession with trying to kill me we didn't finish the dream sequence [which is actually seriously cool] so I'm going over tomorrow with the other kids who can make it... but woes.

BY THE WAY. My going away partay is saturday afternoon, from 2. There will probably be some food of some description. Let me know if you're coming.

Now: to sleep, or not to sleep?

PS: Merlin is amazing, why didn't anyone tell me it was a MOTW show?

Where can I get Perogies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierogi) in this city (Ideally, ones filled with mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese)? Frozen or fresh or at a restaurant, I don't care... I just want perogies!

YAY! I've finished something that's not a scarf!

I'm just so stoked that I finished a project! Normally I get tired of the project or something goes wrong (like the dog eats the project, or the cat kills the remaining yarn). But I have overcome! I am finished.
And although there is only one in the picture, there are really a matched set of gauntlets on my hands right now!

Wanna see?! )

Where I got the pattern:
http://yarnophiliac.blogspot.com/2006/09/smocked-gauntlets-free-pattern.html

I decided to just continue the rib pattern for the back.
I used some german acrylic blend sport weight yarn.
If anyone wants to know what the yarn brand/color is, just let me know. I have the label at home.
Funny how it has gotten so hard to find sport weight in the Sacramento, CA area. Three of the four yarn shops in a 60 mile radius of where I live have closed down this year.
It is almost enough of an excuse for me to go psycho about my yarn stash...

Hello!

It is that time of year again so I thought I would pass on that Moggie Lodge Cattery (in Pukerua Bay) still has some vacancies for the Christmas/New Year period if anyone is looking.

They are really lovely and I highly recommend them. I just called to book.

I always forget to book a cattery and then end up calling around madly so I thought I would pass this one on for anyone in the same position.

Phone number is (04) 2399898.

Another hair dye question [Nov. 17th, 2008|10:53 pm]

wellingtonnz

[luciifer]
So I saw the hair dye question a bit back. I want to dye my hair, but i don't want to buy a zillion boxes of the supermarket hair dye. I usually just go to a beauty supply store and buy the dye and the developer seperately. It's cheaper, and theres a much much wider range of colours. Is there a beauty supply store like that, in lower hutt preferably, but not necessary. (eg: sally beauty)

Oh, I'm not looking for crazy colours.

thank you in advance!

Car parks [Nov. 17th, 2008|08:59 pm]

Hey all,

We've just moved out of central Welly, driving in a couple of times a week for summer classes, and we need somewhere cheap to park for a few hours on those days and my google-fu is failing me. Help? Prefer a parking building close to Victoria Uni (I know of a few on Boulcott St, but I'm unsure about prices) :)

Thanks.

LJ News Special Edition: Server Move, Permanent Account Sale Update, A La Carte Userpics [Nov. 16th, 2008|11:35 pm]

news

[theljstaff]
Welcome to a Very Special Edition of LJ News.

Moving Day and What It Means for You

Moving What Where?

The long-awaited server move takes place this Tuesday, November 18, at 8:00 a.m. PST. We're moving the site from servers based in San Francisco to the servers in our new data center in Montana. A massive data move like this takes a lot of heavy lifting, and to haul all that data from San Francisco to Montana, we have to take the site down, starting at 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning. We don't think the move will take more than four hours, but there's always the possibility that it could take longer (the best laid plans and all).

What Does This Mean for You?

During the downtime, nothing on LJ will be available—no posting, no Friends page, no LJ mail, nada. When we bring the site back up, we're going to ease into it rather than open up a floodgate of traffic. Posting might not be immediately available or the site could be slow to load for a while.

New servers mean new IP addresses, so it's possible that LJ mail might not reach your email inbox because your email provider or client doesn't recognize the new IP addresses. We're working with email providers to whitelist the new IPs. There are a few things you can do on your end:
  • Add these two IP addresses to your "allowed senders" list (or whitelist) and address book in your email client: 208.93.0.18 and 208.93.0.50. These are the new IPs for sending comments notifications and LJ mail to your email inbox.

  • Add lj_notify@livejournal.com and webmaster@livejournal.com to your email address book.

If you can't edit the spam or junk filters in your email client, you may need to disable them entirely. Make these changes just before 8:00 a.m. PST on Tuesday morning or shortly after the site comes back up to ensure that your LJ mail makes it to your inbox.

Those of you who use domain aliasing to forward your domain to your LiveJournal will need to create a CNAME record that maps to livejournal.com. Please note that we're no longer supporting the A record. For more information, check the domain forwarding FAQ.

Before the move, you can check [info]lj_maintenance for complete details about the planned downtime. During the move, you can check status.livejournal.org for updates about the site's status.

Permanent Account Sale Delayed

We regret to inform you that due to the server move, the Permanent Account sale has been pushed back to December 4, rather than November 20 as announced in the last news post. After the virtual dust has settled from the move, we'll be able to turn our attention to the Permanent Account sale. Except for the start date, the details remain the same: You have a limited opportunity to purchase LJ for life for only $175. It's a bummer to delay the sale, but on the bright side, you have more time to save up.

But What About A La Carte Userpics?

We know we promised more information about a la carte userpics, and we're sorry that details have not been forthcoming (blame it on the move). We're still planning on having a la carte userpics, but we don’t have any details yet. When the move is over, we'll have more information. We're sorry for the delay.

Arrgh! [Nov. 17th, 2008|01:21 pm]

knitting_chat

[bunnikins]
I cannot knit brain today, I has the dumb.

So, I'm knitting along happily on my latest project just now, and I begin to realize with a sinking feeling that although I am *so close* to the end of the piece I'm practically done, I'm not going to have enough yarn, I'll have to join in another ball.

So I try for a while to knit fast enough to outrace the end of the yarn, but it's not working, and I give in ungracefully when I see there's no denying the fact that my remaining foot of yarn won't stretch to the two more rows and casting off that are all I have left of the piece. I plop my project in my lap, reach for a new ball, and then I stop and tell myself sternly that this is no excuse for sulking.

'Self', I tell me, 'You will not do a half-hearted job on this just because you resent having to join new yarn for two measly rows." So I do my spit-splice, and I take a lot of trouble with it. I separate out the yarn ends neatly, I even tease off two plies from one end and one from the other so my 3-ply yarn will join back together nicely. I usually never bother with this, but I do this time, and it looks beautiful. My join is strong, and well-nigh invisible. I admire it for a few more minutes, feeling smug, and then I pick my project back up again, proud of myself and ready to zap through that two-more-rows-and-a-castoff...

And discover I've very carefully spit-spliced my new ball to the tail left from my cast-on, not to the working end of my yarn.

Arrgh. I nearly cried, cutting the new ball off and redoing my splice. And of course, although I tried hard, my heart just wasn't in it, and my second join is kind of lumpy and pathetic, and I am sad, and my join is sad, and my knitting is sad.

I think I'll do something else for a while. Knitting clearly isn't my forte today.

[Current Mood | annoyed]

Also. There is someone in [info]whatwasthatone who has posted a couple of times, recently, with pictures of minor SG-1 guest stars and a request to identify them. This usually wouldn't bother me, because sometimes SG-1 has about 12 thousand guest stars who aren't on IMDB - but EVERY SINGLE ONE has been identifiable on IMDB, and EASILY. [For example: a picture of Krista [Erica Durance] from that Teal'c episode. If you can watch that episode and not figure out the character's name you're a moron, but even if you're really dumb there are only one or two women guest stars and you can always just look at each of them.] I recommended her IMDB last time and she complained that it was "not user-friendly" and "useless except for main characters". Well, no, it's not as user friendly as a comm you can spam to get people to do your bidding, but FFS! I don't know why this annoys me so. LEARN TO USE A WEBSITE. Sheesh.

Victory! [Nov. 17th, 2008|02:32 pm]

An email exchange:

ME: Kia ora [Person I was hoping would be my Honours supervisor], I was hoping to enrol in the summer/first semester research essay paper, although I know it's very late [because summer school started today]! The topic I'd
like to engage on is looking at the motherly girl in young adult
fiction, particularly the classic English adventure stories (for
example, the respective Susans from Narnia and Ransome's "Swallows and
Amazons" series), and how these roles can be interrogated in more
modern stories that nevertheless retain a similar "feel" - I'm
thinking particularly of some of the young women in Diana Wynne Jones'
more recent novels (Arianrhod Hyde and Charmain Baker, if you happen
to be familiar with those books.) To get more to the point, I was
hoping that you would be willing to supervise me.

SAID PERSON: That sounds really interesting! I'd be keen to supervise a
dissertation/honours essay on this subject.

\o/ WHEW/YAY.
